A rare, behind-the-scenes look at some “prep” photos on installation day!
Visions from the Dutch Masters

When I received an inquiry about planning a birthday party themed around still life paintings of the Dutch Masters—for a wedding photographer—I knew the bar was preset at high! As soon as I entered her grand home in Pasadena, I envisioned it perfectly. The lighting was ambient and natural with sunlit tones reminiscent of old world paintings. A friendship was formed and her party date was set!

I excitedly pored over volumes of books about this historical period and plans became solidified. On installation day, we created the best party footprint by starting with an extensive interior rearrangment of the furnishings. Town & Country Event Rentals supplied the party basics. We decorated, draped and scaped with beautiful silk fabrics in colors that complemented her existing décor (leopard prints, Tiffany blue, and browns). Lavish Taylor + Taylor florals and a tall candelabra became the focal point of the buffet's main table. An oversize art book was set upon the table, opened to a specific page. Elements common to the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century were selected predominantly from Jordi & CO's personally culled props; including china, faux books, copper and silver pieces, feathers, and an ink well and quill that were crafted for the occasion. It took only a quick glance for party guests to notice that this tablescape was a "living" recreation of the still life displayed in the open book! Similarly, the dining room hutch was prepped with antique gold linens and high cocktail rounds to serve as the dessert table.

The next day, my client deemed everything as having been "amazing" and the caterer reported that, "guests were 'wowed'!" It was both a challenge, and an honor to give life to a mastered still life. This was truly a unique and artistic endeavour!
