A Special 21st Birthday
(Click any photo to start slides)
Going from prohibition to no need for permission is a big deal! The Jazz Era is a perfect theme for such a celebratory event (and what special fun this was, since this party was for my daughter, and in our own home). Invited guests were the birthday girl's close friends. They were asked to dress in 20-30s era garb. Hints of The Great Gatsby could be found throughout with golds and silvers set the celebratory tone. Lighting was moody and music was lively (and live!). This was a mid-summer evening affair that afforded perfect weather to take advantage of our lovely outdoor entertaining loggias.
The Food and Beverages:
Upscale finger-foods offered selections for every palate. Of course, Jordi & CO catered and served some of my daughter's own favs. I took inspiration from Gatsby and The Sun Also Rises for offerings such as mini-lobster rolls, Nantucket salmon cakes and sausage bites with Spanish romesco or chimichurri sauce (among others). Since 21 is a true coming-of -age, a specialty drink menu at a lovely staged bar was a must. Innovative concoctions on the posted "Bar 21 Americaine Menu" included a special "Hemingway Daiquiri," "Big as the Ritz Manhattan," and an "Algonquin Martini." The guest of honor's love of chocolate was obvious in her choice of sweets. She chose to serve her favorite See's boxed candy (milk chocolate Bordeauxs) and her stunning 3-tiered "quilted" chocolate cake in golden tones and art-deco design was as delicious as it was lovely. Sam crafted the budinos herself, in individual sherry glasses with rosemary and sea salt. Divine!
Custom florals were abundant and the ivories of our own grand piano were tickled fantastic by our favorite live pianist. Indoor tablescapes and outdoor terraces popped with Jordi & CO's own themed props, including a vintage typewriter and classic books decorated with typeset with quotations from era authors F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, and period fashions and jewelry. A near-actual size cut-out of a classic Gatsby-era automobile graced the lawn while guests posed picture-perfect adjacent to appear "behind the wheel," and in the distance (if you're familiar with The Great Gatsby), you could just make out "the green light."
From the Guest of Honor:
"My friends had a great time. I can't think of a better way to have celebrated my 21st than in my own home. I've always loved the history of the jazz era and the music of course, can't be topped. The food was fantastic. I'll always remember this special birthday party."
